First ten minutes after a pipe bursts
What you do before we arrive limits the damage.
- Close the main water shutoff. It is often near the meter, where the line enters the house.
- Open the lowest faucet to let the pipes drain, and open a hot tap to relieve the water heater.
- Switch off the breakers for rooms with wet outlets, ceiling lights, or appliances, only if the panel is dry and you can reach it safely.
- Move furniture, rugs, and electronics out of the water's path, and photograph the damage for your insurer.
- Call us. Tell us the pipe material if you know it, and where the water is coming from.
If you cannot find the valve, try the basement near the front wall, a utility closet, or a crawl space. In an apartment building, there may be a unit shutoff and a building shutoff, and the second belongs to the property manager.
Why pipes split
Freezing is the best-known cause. Water expands as it turns to ice, and the pipe splits where the ice plug sits, often showing up only after thaw. Other causes include corrosion in old steel or galvanized pipe, a failed joint, high water pressure, and physical damage during a remodel.
A burst is not always dramatic. A pinhole in copper can spray a fine mist for days inside a wall. A cracked supply valve under a sink can leak steadily. Our leak detection team locates a hidden source when you cannot see where the water is coming from.
Pipe types we meet in North Chicago homes
| Material | Common in | How it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Galvanized steel | Older homes built decades ago | Rusts from inside, leaks at threads, loses pressure |
| Copper | Many mid-century and later homes | Pinholes, split from freezing, failed solder joints |
| PEX | Newer builds and remodels | Fitting failures, damage from sun or sharp bends |
| Cast iron drains | Older buildings | Cracks and rusted joints, more often a leak than a spray |
The city's lead service line plan lists 144 galvanized service lines that need replacement. That is the line from the street, but it hints at how old some of the plumbing is. If your house still has galvanized pipe inside, one burst may be followed by another, and we will tell you.
Houses, duplexes, and apartment buildings
Only 37.5% of North Chicago housing units are single-family detached homes. The rest are attached houses, small multi-unit buildings, and larger complexes. In a building with five or more units, which is about 28% of the city's stock, a burst in one unit can soak the ceiling of the unit below.
If you rent, tell your landlord or manager immediately, take photos, and keep a note of the time. We can write up the break so the owner and insurers have a record. If you manage a building, tell us how many units are affected and whether there are separate shutoffs.
What a burst pipe repair includes
Stop the water
We confirm the shutoff works, or install a temporary stop if the valve is stuck.
Find the full break
We trace the damaged section and check nearby runs, because one burst can stress the pipe around it.
Cut and replace
We remove the failed piece and replace it with the right fittings and pipe for the existing system.
Pressure test
We bring the line back up to pressure and watch the joints for weeping before we call it complete.
Explain what is next
We tell you what drying, drywall, and insurance steps come next, and which parts of the plumbing you should watch.
If we find several weak sections or a corroded run, we will explain whether a repiping plan makes more sense than repeated repairs. A leak at the street side is a water service line repair job.

What changes the price
A short fix at an exposed pipe and a repair behind finished walls are different jobs.

Yes. A burst at 3 a.m. gets the same response as one at 3 p.m. We answer every hour of the day, and we can coach you through the shutoff while a technician drives over from our Skokie Highway base.
If the break is on the hot side or the tank could run dry, switch the unit off at the gas control or breaker. A heater that fires with no water can be damaged.
If the cause was freezing, a flaw in a fitting, or simple age, we tell you which. Where corrosion is widespread, other sections may fail, and we point out the risk.
Yes. We locate the break, open the smallest access we can, and make the repair. Drywall patching and painting are a separate trade unless we agree otherwise up front. We take the same calls in Libertyville and other towns nearby.
We test the repair and turn the water on with you before we leave, then you can open faucets to clear air. Check the repair area again over the next day.
Wet materials should be dried quickly to reduce mold risk. A restoration company can assess it, and your insurance company can explain its limits.
